Aid to Refugees

Welcome Refugees …

Faith communities, other groups, and individuals in the Greater Cincinnati area work to welcome refugees under the leadership of Catholic Charities of Southwest Ohio, which works in this area under contract with the United States government. These refugees, of various religious and ethnic groups, have undergone several levels of screening, and many of them have been waiting in refugee camps for years.

Who are refugees …

A refugee is a person who has fled or has been forced to leave his/her home country out of fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.  Often refugees leave home suddenly taking few possessions and spend decades living in refugee camps.

Why we serve …

The Torah teaches us to “love the stranger, for you were strangers in the Land of Egypt.” Many times throughout history, Jews have had to flee the countries in which they lived to become refugees and strangers in a new land, It is a mitzvah to welcome strangers, newcomers, in our community and to love them as we love ourselves.

Four Steps

Individuals and organizations can welcome refugees as they take their first steps towards their American dream in a number of ways.

Please send cash donations to the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, with “Refugees” in the memo line. You can donate online by clicking here. Bring donations in kind to the synagogue.
