THE PROPHETS

A BI-WEEKLY CLASS

Wednesdays at 12:00 pm

At Northern Hills Synagogue

According to Jewish tradition, the power of prophecy was given to Abraham, Moses, Deborah, David, and Elijah (to name just a few). But what makes someone a prophet, and how should we understand the prophets of our tradition today? Rabbi Noah Ferro will explore these questions and more in a series of classes on Wednesday afternoons until April 24, 2019.

Lunch will begin at 12:00 PM followed by study from 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM in the Zorndorf Social Hall on the following dates:

Our next meeting is on February 27.

In March, things get a little more complicated.

To avoid conflicts with other early afternoon programs in March, we are only meeting on March 20 (Erev Purim, Fast of Esther) and March 27 (that's two weeks back-to-back).

Also note: Because of the Fast of Esther, the session on March 20 will not include a lunch. We will begin with informal study together at 12, offering some time for early arrivals to ask questions and share some ideas. If you cannot get here at 12:00 PM (it's a difficult struggle against traffic sometimes), not to worry; we will begin the formal part of our session at 12:30 PM.

The last two sessions of our class occur on April 10 and April 24.

Rabbi Ferro wants us to read excerpts from the words of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel; to try to understand how the rabbis of the Talmud understood prophetic literature; and to see why the prophets of the Hebrew Bible aren't merely "seers" or "fortune tellers." What else we do, however, is in large part up to you. This class will explore these questions and more.

The class is free to NHS members, but we want to keep an accurate head count for copies and room setup. We therefore request that you register by contacting Kim Heath in the office (admin@nhs-cba.org) or Rabbi Ferro (rabbi@nhs-cba.org).

And should you choose to stop attending, please let us know that as well.

Lunch will also be provided at no charge (usually bagels and salads) -- though we will need to know how many people to feed, of course.

We gladly accept donations at the door to help offset the cost.
