Shomrei Olam: Cut a Ton of Carbon

Join the NHS Team!

Our Next Meeting: Monday, Nov. 11, 2019
7:00pm at Gayna's House

Please RSVP to Gayna

Shomrei Olam, a Jewish environmental non-profit, believes that caring for the planet is a Jewish value.  The idea is to encourage members of several Jewish congregations to team up to change their household behaviors to reduce their carbon footprint. Our goal is that each team together will cut a ton of CO2 by the end of the year. Changing habits is challenging, but if the earth as we know it is to survive, we must try!

Please read the following article published Sept. 17, 2019, in the Washington Post: why-baby-boomers-grandchildren-will-hate-them/

A pilot study, in which Rockdale Temple is also participating, is planned for this Fall. Gayna Bassin, our NHS Team captain, is looking to assemble at least 10 NHS individuals or families.  Everyone will receive a packet explaining the program and providing charts to keep track of our progress.  We will meet once a month for the next three months for the Fall study.  In the future, there will be a different theme every 3 months to continue to inspire and assist people in adopting sustainable behaviors.  Even if you are already doing some of these conservation measures, please join our team so as to encourage others.

Our Fall Challenge is "Waste Reduction: Paper, Plastic & Trees".  This means avoiding using single-use plastic and paper bags, cups and plates, and printing less, paying bills online, etc.  We will meet once a month to tally our points.

If you are interested in joining, please contact Gayna at 513-793-7369 or email gmbassin@hotmail.com

Mill Creek Cleanup
Sunday, Oct 20, 2019
10:00am - 12:30pm

On Sunday morning, a group from the NHS Shomrei Olam team put 'boots on the ground' and volunteered for the Mill Creek Alliance to help maintain the West Fork of the Mill Creek. They performed environmental restoration by removing invasive species (mainly honeysuckle) in the creek area. After the work, many celebrated together at the Pike Bar and Grill!
